Where to stay in Venice

Compare three areas in Venice and choose a base for your trip.

Choose around your plans

Where to stay: our starting recommendation

Compare San Marco for monuments, Cannaregio according to your rail arrival and Dorsoduro for museums. Mestre is a mainland alternative with a daily journey to include.

A practical check for this destination
Before booking, map the route from your arrival point to the hotel with luggage. Count bridge crossings and check the nearest vaporetto stop rather than relying on straight-line distance.

Places to avoid: location, noise and access

These are locations that may not suit your trip. This is not a ranking of dangerous neighbourhoods.

  • Mestre: do not book expecting to sleep in Venice’s historic centre. Calculate the daily connection and return after evenings out.
  • Hotels beyond several bridges: do not assess access by walking minutes alone. With luggage or a pushchair, check steps and the route from the stop.
  • San Marco and Castello: skip vague “near the square” claims without an exact address. Compare the route to your stop and sights, not just a canal.

Safety: plan your stay

A neighbourhood name or a good hotel rating does not guarantee safety. Plan your arrival and return journeys, and consult official travel advice before departure.

Areas in detail

San Marco

Landmarks around St Mark’s Square

Check the walking route and the exact address.

Cannaregio

Canal walks and a different pace

Compare travel time to the sights on your list.

Dorsoduro

Museums and walks around the district

Read recent reviews for noise and check your return route.

Before booking

Compare the total price for the same dates and number of travellers. Check the route from the property to your first two stops, along with taxes and the cancellation deadline.

Getting around

Choose your area, plan your arrival and check the full cost.

For a short stay

Build your stay around your first two visits. Compare the exact hotel addresses and the time you will spend getting between them.

If location matters most

Check the route at the time you will actually travel. Look for steps, a difficult walk with luggage or a last connection that leaves too early.

A simple plan for your first two days

On arrival day, use one nearby activity to get your bearings and check the return route. On day two, group visits in the same area so you can see how much travel your hotel location adds.

Trip budget

If you are watching your budget

Add the costs of getting around and any meals you would otherwise buy. A lower nightly rate is only a saving if the extra costs stay below the difference.

The total to compare

Use the same dates, room occupancy and cancellation policy. Add mandatory charges, airport transfers and the local journeys you expect to make.

What to check before you pay

Check your room category, included meals, final price and cancellation deadline. For a late arrival, confirm reception hours and how you will get your key.

Compare accommodation after checking the area

Search your dates, locate the address on a map and compare the terms of the exact room.
